Weinende Madonnenstatue in Bangladesh
Aufgrund von Berichten über eine weinende Madonnenstatue in
einer römisch-katholischen Kirche im Hafen von Chittagong sind
Tausende von Menschen in das Gotteshaus gekommen.
Viele der Besucher sind Muslime, die sich das anschauen wollen,
was manche der Anwohner für ein Zeichen der Madonna halten
- angesichts der jüngsten Gewaltausbrüche im Land und
überall auf der Welt. Nach Ansicht katholischer Gläubiger
sei dies das erste Mal, dass in Bangladesch eine Madonnenfigur Tränen
vergießt.

Weinende Statue in Venezuela
In einer Kirche in der venezolanischen Hauptstadt Caracas stehen Hunderte
von Menschen Schlange, um der Landesheiligen zu huldigen. Wie es heißt,
weint die Statue der Jungfrau von Coromoto Öl-Tränen. Kirchenbedienstete
tränken damit Stoffstreifen und verteilen sie. Der Gemeindepfarrer
nannte es ein Zeichen für den Wunsch der Jungfrau, Venezuela durch
die gegenwärtige politische Krise zu begleiten.

Shivawunder in Indien
Tausende von Hindus strömten im westlichen Indien zu den Tempeln,
als sich die Kunde verbreitete, aus den heiligen Symbolen Shivas, einem
der drei Götter der hinduistischen Trinität, fließe Wasser.
Nur mit Mühe konnte im Bundesstaat Gujarat die Polizei noch die Ordnung
aufrechterhalten: Überall drängten sich die Menschenmassen,
um einen Blick auf einen Shivalingam, einen jener ellipsenförmigen
Steine zu werfen, die den Hindus als Schöpfungssymbol heilig sind.
Einige Gläubige behaupten, sie hätten gehört, daß
auf Lingams auch das Symbol des "Om" erschienen sei.

Statue von Padre Pio weint Blut

Mehrere
tausend Menschen sind bisher nach Messina auf Sizilien gepilgert,
seitdem dort ein zwei Meter hohes Standbild des in Italien hochverehrten
Padre Pio blutige Tränen "weint". Wie die italienische Nachrichtenagentur
Ansa berichtete, hatte ein Passant den Eindruck, dass die vor der
Kirche der Madonna von Pompeji aufgestellte Statue weinte und einen
ortsansässigen Priester gerufen, der dann vergeblich versuchte,
die rote Substanz wegzuwischen.
Nachdem die Abendnachrichten über das Wunder berichtet hatten, strömten
die Menschen zu dieser Statue des Padre Pio, der vom Papst im kommenden
Juni heilig gesprochen werden soll. Der 1968 gestorbene Pater war
berühmt geworden, weil mit ihm seit Jahrhunderten erstmals wieder
ein Priester die Stigmata trug - jene Wunden, die Jesus bei seiner
Kreuzigung an Händen, Füssen und den Rippen beigebracht wurden.
Die Polizei entnahm Proben der Flüssigkeit zu Analyse.

Wundersamer Abdruck auf Glasscheibe
Ikonen in Russisch-orthodoxen Kirchen haben normalerweise eine durchsichtige
Schutzscheibe aus Glas. Im Jahr 1993 zeigte sich ein exaktes Abbild einer
Madonnen-Ikone, die in einer Kirche in Kiew (Ukraine) ausgestellt wird,
auf der Schutzscheibe. Das Bild ist sehr deutlich, grau und sieht wie
ein milchiger Schatten im Glas aus (siehe Fotografien). Die Kirche hat
es als Wunder anerkannt und eine Dokumentation und eine Broschüre
über die Geschichte herausgegeben. Ukrainische Wissenschaftler haben
versucht, eine physische Ursache zu finden, aber konnten das Phänomen
nicht erklären. Sie akzeptierten es als göttliches Wunder.

ILLINOIS - Kurz nachdem eine kleine hölzerne Statue der Jungfrau
Maria in der St. John of God Catholic Kirche in Chicago aufgestellt wurde,
begann sie zu weinen. Der Gemeindepriester Raymond J. Jasinski berichtete,
dass er und andere Zeugen nach einer Messe Tränen aus den Augen der
Statue strömen sahen. Tausende Menschen haben seither die weinende
Statue in der Kirche gesehen.

Weinende Statuen in Indien
Infolge von Berichten, wonach die Augen einiger Tempelfiguren der Hindu-Göttin
Durga feucht geworden seien und auch in anderen Tempeln religiösen
Statuen Tränen herunterliefen, strömten Anfang September viele
tausend Menschen in der indischen Stadt Hyderabad zu ihren Tempeln.
Der Priester eines Durga-Tempels im Altstadtbezirk Dhoolpet sagte, er
sei Zeuge eines Wunders geworden: Die Augen der steinernen Durga-Statue
seien feucht geworden. Einige der Stadtbewohner, die vor kurzem unter
verheerenden Überschwemmungen und sintflutartigen Regenfällen
gelitten hatten, glauben, die Gottheit weine wegen ihrer Not.
"Ich bin sicher, daß Durga Mata [Mutter Durga] über die
jüngsten Verheerungen weint und um die Menschen in der Stadt, die
dabei ums Leben gekommen sind", meint Mukund Lal, der im Durga-Tempel
in Dhoolpet die weinende Figur gesehen hatte.

Zarenikone weint Myrrhe
In der Auferstehungskirche in Moskau begann am 7. November 1999, dem Jahrestag
der bolschewistischen Machtübernahme, eine Ikone von Zar Nikolaus
II Myrrhe zu weinen. Berichten zufolge war der Duft besonders stark, wenn
Gedenkgottesdienste für den ermordeten Zaren abgehalten wurden, der
von der russisch-orthodoxen Kirche möglicherweise heiliggesprochen
wird.

Marienstatue bewegt sich
Auf den Philippinen strömen Scharen von Besuchern zu einer wundersamen
Statue Unserer Lieben Frau von Lourdes. Die Marienfigur, die in einer
Grotte im Garten der Pfarrkirche San Diego de Alcalá in Valenzuela
im Stadtteil Polo steht, hat sich Augenzeugen zufolge in den Tagen vor
dem 11. Februar, dem Feiertag Unserer Lieben Frau von Lourdes, bewegt.
"Ich sah, wie sich ihre Kleider, Füße und Hände bewegten.
Auch ihr Körper drehte sich seitlich zur Kirche hin", berichtet
der Ortsansässige Conrado Evangelista. "Ein Besucher war schon
früher da. Er zeigte uns ein Photo der Heiligen. Dadurch konnte man
den Unterschied erkennen: Auf dem Foto sieht man, daß die Finger
das Kinn berühren, aber jetzt befinden sich die Finger etwa zwölf
Zentimeter unterhalb des Kinns."
Die Besucher kommen mit Plastikbehältern und füllen das Wasser
ab, das unter den Füßen der Figur hervorkommt, und viele berichten,
daß sie sich nach dem Genuß des Wassers besser fühlten.

Wunder in Tibet
Im tibetischen Lhasa weint eine Statue kleine Perlen, berichtet ein deutscher
Journalist. Dabei handelt es sich um eine Figur des Buddha Shakyamuni
im Jokhang-Tempel. Der Lama, der den Journalisten darauf hinwies, berichtete,
daß die Statue häufig weint, und daß die Lamas davon
immer sehr bewegt sind. Der Journalist hat fünf der Perlen mit nach
München gebracht und will eine davon chemisch analysieren lassen.
Über die Perlen sagt er: "Sie sind entzückend und sehen
wie Liebesperlen aus."

Russian miracle
Russian church officials will examine a portrait of the last Czar that
seems to be weeping, to determine whether it qualifies as a miracle. The
icon, a portrait of Czar Nicholas II, has been exuding myrrh almost every
day since it was brought to the church by a parishioner on 7 November
1998, the anniversary of the 1917 Russian revolution. Bolsheviks executed
Nicholas II in 1918; his remains were recovered in 1991. According to
orthodox tradition, the appearance of fragrant liquids such as myrrh on
relics could be considered a miracle.

Weinende Nonne
Ein Geschenkladen an der Strandpromenade von Boscombe in Südengland
lockt sei einiger Zeit Pilger an, die mit eigenen Augen sehen wollen,
wie eine 25 Zentimeter große Plastikfigur einer Nonne wirkliche
Tränen weint. Michael Maclaire Hiller, der Ladenbesitzer, hatte die
Figur aus Italien importiert und sie in einem Plastikkasten in seinem
Schaufenster ausgestellt.
Nach ein paar Stunden erzählte ihm eine Kundin, daß sie auf
dem Gesicht und dem Kleid der Puppe Tränen sehen könne. Michael
Maclaire Hiller sagte: "Sie steht in einem fest verschlossenen Schaukasten,
es ist also völlig ausgeschlossen, daß Wasser oder Kondenswasser
hineingelangen konnte. Ich habe meine Videokamera von zuhause geholt -
und ich behalte die Nonne jetzt immer im Auge."

Madonna painting oozes oil
For six months the Ladhu family from Detroit have opened their home for
people to witness their Madonna painting which since Thanksgiving has
been weeping oil. Mrs Ladhu, who fled Iraq 20 years ago when her outspoken
Christianity got her into trouble, now lives with her five children in
a "rental in a dead-end block".
They open their doors from Monday to Friday for five hours a day. On occasions
the local police have been called to help with traffic and parking, as
numbers of visitors have swelled. The painting, bought 10 years ago at
a Cyprus monastery, oozes oil from all over its surface, and not just
the eyes.
Joe Nichell, author of Looking for Miracles and editor of The Skeptical
Inquirer, says that this fact makes the miracle very unusual. Also the
quantities in this case - reportedly quarts, if not gallons - are beyond
anything he has heard of before.

'Bleeding Christ' statue in India
Thousands of visitors have flocked to see a 'bleeding Christ' statue in
Calcutta, according to Indian police. A lawyer who lives in the compound
of a church in the city said she saw blood coming from wounds of the Christ
figure on an 18-inch cross at her home. "I went to clean it and noticed
it was bleeding from where Christ was nailed and where the crown of thorns
was," said Ajanta Rovena Chatterjee. More than 10,000 people have
prayed at the icon.

Icon's tears bring medical miracles
An icon in St Nicholas Orthodox Church in Columbus, Ohio, is weeping tears
of oil, which have been the cause of miraculous healings. The icon depicting
Jesus, angels and saints on Judgement Day originated in the Soviet
Union and was given by Russian Orthodox nuns to Archbishop Michael of
the Holy Orthodox Catholic Patriarchate of America Archdiocese.
When sunlight streamed onto the icon through two basement windows, an
image similar to the face on the Turin Shroud appeared on the glass. Then
the icon began to shed oily 'tears', and a mysterious floral scent began
to overpower the chapel. The Church had the icon subjected to scientific
examination by a respected research institute that found there was no
hoax or manipulation of any kind.
According to medical records at nearby Mount Carmel Hospital, a woman
found that the hole in her heart vanished after praying and being annointed
with the icon's tears. The Associated Press and the Columbus Dispatch
reported that this is only one of many accounts of such healings. Traditionally,
in the Orthodox Church, holy icons are considered to be "windows
into heaven." The church invites people of all faiths to come and
witness this "wonderful and miraculous" icon.

Weeping statue of Jesus in Benin
On 1 April 1997 a statue in the community of the Franciscan Sisters in
Gebegamey in Benin, Africa, began weeping tears of blood. Vincent Metonnou,
a journalist for the weekly Le Forum, wonders why there are now so many
similar "signs of sorrow" appearing all over the world: "Has
the world lost the way?" He concluded that the Son of Man is probably
saddened by mankind's villainy.

Miracles in Chicago area
In the Chicago Sun Times, writer on religious matters Tom Sheridan says
many miraculous events have occurred in the Chicago area in recent years,
although few have received 'official' status as miracles. The Eastern
Orthodox Church, which has less stringent "requirements" for
the miraculous than the Roman Catholic Church, has officially deemed two
occurrences as miracles in the Chicago area:
the weeping icon of Mary at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in Cicero,
Illinois, and a small paper copy of that same icon, also said to be weeping
this year. The copy was said by the Bishop Demetri Khoury to be an "extension"
of the first miracle. The article listed other phenomena in the Chicago
area that have been deemed miracles by those who have seen them:
"A wooden statue of Mary at St John of God Church on the Southwest
Side appeared to shed tears in 1984. More than a year later, the Roman
Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago said: 'We are not able to eliminate the
possibility that natural causes might explain the occurrence.'"
"A painting of Mary began to 'weep' at St Nicholas Albanian Orthodox
Church on 6 December 1986. A church official called it 'miraculous', but
stopped short of declaring it a miracle."
"A painting of the Virgin Mary and Jesus was reported to be weeping
in April 1987, at the apartment of a retired tailor on the Northwest Side."
"A crucifix at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, bled in July 1991,
according to a retired railroad worker."
"In 1994, visitors to a St Charles religious gift store maintained

Multiple weeping icons in Cyprus
In just one month five weeping icons have been reported in churches on
the island of Cyprus. The first icon to weep tears was at Kykkos monastery
where thousands of people have flocked to witness the miracle. Since then
weeping icons have been reported at Mammari and Ayios Georgios churches
in Nicosia, and on 24. February 1997 icons in Ayii Trimithias and Peyia
churches also started shedding tears.

Pilger strömen ins neue Lourdes
Bischof Girolamo Grillo von Civitavècchia, das 45 Kilometer nördlich

zu assistieren. Die "Madonnina" ist eine kleine Marienfigur,

Er erzählte, die Anzahl der Pilger hätte sich in den vergangenen
Wochen verdoppelt, an manchen Tagen seien es mehr als 20 000, und es würden
dauern mehr. Er begrüße dies sehr, weil er restlos davon überzeugt
sei, daß hier etwas Überirdisches geschehe. Die Jungfrau weine
blutige Tränen wegen der Mißstände und Ungäubigkeit
in der heutigen Gesellschaft.
Das vorläufig zehnköpfige Priesterteam war zutiefst gerührt,
nicht nur, weil bei jeder Messe 2000 Hostien verteilt werden konnten,
sondern weil fast alle vorher beichten wollten. "Sie nehmen die Beichte
unter freiem Himmel ab, unter den Bäumen, überall, wo sich Platz
findet."
Die meisten Pilger kommen in Wagenkolonnen aus dem Süden des Landes,
aber immer mehr kommen auch weiter her angereist.

Madonna - Tränen im Park
Volendam/Rom - Das Wunder von Volendam: Eine Madonnenstatue in einem öffentlichen
Park weint da seit Pfingsten angeblich Bluttränen.
Vor zwei Jahren gab es in den Niederlanden schon einmal eine wundersame
weinende Madonna. Aber: Als Chemiker die Statue untersuchten, kamen sie
zu dem verblüffenden Ergebnis: Sie weinte nur, wenn schönes
Wetter war. Weil die Sonne das Harz, mit dem Figur zusammengeklebt war,
schmelzen ließ . . .
Die Blut-Madonna von Civitavecchia in Italien dagegen wurde vom Vatikan
als Wunder anerkannt. Ein Buch enthüllt jetzt: Zweimal erschien sie
ihrem Besitzer im Traum. Und eine Stimme befahl ihm: "Trag' sie in
die Kirche zu ihrem Sohn."

Marienfigur in Trinidad weint blutige Tränen
Eine Statue der Lieben Frau aus Lourdes in einem Karmeliterinnenkloster
in Diego Martin, im Westen Trinidads, weint blutige Tränen.
Der Lokalpresse zufolge wurden die Tränen am 15. Februar 1996 zum
ersten Mal beobachtet. Professor Courtenay Bartholomew, ein ortsansässiger
Arzt, der ein Buch über Marienerscheinungen geschrieben hat, soll
das Blut getestet und es als menschliches Blut identifiziert haben. Menschen
aus allen Teilen des Landes kamen zum Kloster, um die Marienfigur zu betrachten,
wobei die Schwestern immer nur einigen wenigen zur gleichen Zeit den Besuch
gestatten. Anthony Partin, der Erzbischof von Port of Spain, hat eine
Untersuchung des Phänomens eingeleitet.

Madonna statue at Ballinspittle rocks on
On a summer evening in July 1985, an Irish girl named Clare Mahoney strolled
home at dusk through the pastures and farmlands of County Cork, past a
shrine to the Virgin Mary that she had passed hundreds of times before.
But on that July evening in the village of Ballinspittle, when Clare Mahoney
glanced up at the statue, she saw it move. The Madonna swayed back and
forth. Word spread quickly, and soon thousands of people gathered to see
the phenomenon.
But the sighting generated controversy. The faithful held masses near
the shrine, but scientists said the motion was merely an optical illusion.
Eventually, the scientists and sceptics won out, and the public attention
died down.
Some 10 years after Clare Mahoney's discovery, a writer for FATE magazine
visited the statue with her family. Janet Brennan wrote of her experience:
"We knelt down at the railing that separates the grotto from the
gravel parking lot and looked up at the Madonna. To our amazement, she
was moving. Slowly, almost eerily, she swayed back and forth a few inches.
The movement was so smooth it seemed as if the statue were floating."
Upon closer inspection, her son saw that the statue was held in cement,
with no apparatus to make it move. Brennan concluded: "Pilgrims by
the thousands still pour into Fatima and Lourdes, seeking physical cures
and spiritual comfort and creating thriving tourist industries. But in
a quiet corner of Ireland ... the Madonna of Ballinspittle rocks on in
solitude."

Weeping painting of the Virgin Mary
Crowds are gathering at a church in Kenner, Louisiana, USA, to see a weeping
portrait of the Virgin Mary that hangs beside the altar. The painting
in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church reportedly began shedding tears last
September.
Up to 125 people per hour are now permitted by church officials to view
the manifestation. Many visitors reportedly have come away from the site
convinced they had seen a miracle. Catholic Church officials are taking
a cautious approach, saying they may conduct an investigation, but only
after media attention has waned.

Weeping statue in Kansas
An egg-shaped plaster image of the Madonna, six inches high, had hung
for a year in the trailer home of Thomas and Margarita Holguin in Lewis,
Kansas, without incident. But in the pre-dawn hours of 12 December 1996,
Margarita Holguin turned on the lights and saw what looked like tears
in the eyes of the statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The phenomenon lasted
throughout the following day, and then the tears turned blood red, the
couple said. “I don’t know what to think about it all,”
said Mrs Holguin. “I have never seen anything like this before.”
The phenomenon has drawn the attention of hundreds of people who have
visited the Holguins’ home. December 12, the day Mrs Holguin first

Weeping icon in Canada
Hundreds of people have visited a small Greek Orthodox Church in Toronto,
Canada, to see a painting of the Madonna shedding tears. A replica of
a 750 AD icon of the Madonna began weeping profusely after a Sunday mass
ended, leaving a large puddle below the painting, according to the Reverend
Ieronimos Katseas. Visitors soon began pouring into the Mother Portaitissa,
Sts. Raphael, Nikolaos and Irene Church as word of the miracle spread.
The Reverend Katseas said the church will remain open to anyone wishing
to witness what he and others have called "a modern-day miracle."
Katseas said he believes the phenomenon is a holy prophecy. "It means
something good or bad will happen soon ... but it (the weeping icon) has
powers to heal the sick, too." He said the tears are being collected
and preserved in a bottle. Visitors are allowed to smell the fragrance
before they pray. One worshipper said: "This is a message coming
down from heaven. It's a message from God."

Weinende Madonnenstatue in Puerto Rico
Die Kirchgänger der Kirche Santa Rosa de Lima in Rincon, Puerto Rico,
sahen an einem Sonntag im Juni 1994, wie Tränen über die Wangen
der Marienstatue rannen. Der Priester Edgardo Acosta berichtet, daß
seitdem regelmäßig Tränen aus dem linken Auge der Statue
rinnen und über die Wangen hinunter zum Hals rollen. Das Ereignis
zog eine große Gruppe Gläubiger an, und Acosta mußte
das Gelände absperren, um die Leute fernzuhalten. Die Kirchenbesuche
sind deutlich gestiegen.
Die an ein Marienwunder glauben, sagen die Tränen bringen eine Botschaft.
Maria Hernandez, eine Kirchgängerin, sagte: "Ich glaube, dies
ist eine Botschaft Gottes." Eine andere Kirchenbesucherin, Ada Perez,
meinte: "Ich glaube, die Tränen sagen uns, daß wir unser
Leben ändern sollen." Pater Acosta erzählt:
"Einige berichteten, dieses Ereignis habe ihr Leben verändert.
Andere, daß sie sowohl von körperlichen Beschwerden als auch
psychischen Erkrankungen geheilt wurden, und manche auch, daß sich
ihre Lebensgewohnheiten verändert hätten. Aber in der Stadt
Rincon gibt es auch Skeptiker, die darin ein Zeichen der dunklen Kräfte
sehen. Ich denke, der Himmel schickt uns eine sehr deutliche Botschaft:
Ändert euer Leben. Kehrt zurück zu Gott. Besinnt euch wieder
auf die Grundwerte von Frieden und Glück, denn das ist Gott. Das
ist die Grundlage und Quelle der Liebe."

Madonna von Brunssum "weint" Harz
Ein Ansturm von Gläubigen und Neugierigen sammelt sich vor dem Haus
der Familie Coumans in der Vorstraat in Brunssum, einer niederländischen
Stadt mit 30.000 Einwohnern nahe der deutschen Grenze. Tausende von Menschen
sind bereits dorthin geströmt, nachdem Berichte über Wunderkräfte
einer 30 cm hohen Statue Madonna-Figur aus Polyester erschienen waren.
Nach Berührung der Madonna soll eine rheumakranke Nachbarin wieder
die Arme bewegen können. Bei den Tränen der Statue handelt es
sich laut Labortests um Harz. Der Laborleiter des Krankenhauses Heerlen,
Jan van Weersch, glaubt, dass die Augen der Statue mit Harz angeklebt
worden sind und dieses infolge der Sommerhitze heiß geworden sei.
Die Statue weint allerdings nur auf einem Auge.

Jesus-Visionen in Österreich
In der kleinen Stadt Eisenberg a.d. Raab (Burgenland) in Österreich
nahe der ungarischen Grenze befindet sich im Garten eines Bauernhofes,
der Aloisia Lex und ihrem Mann gehört, ein Kreuz im Rasen. Das Kreuz
ist seit dem 6. September 1956 dort. Seine Balken sind etwa ein Meter
lang. Aloisia hatte dort eine Vision von Jesus, und an dieser Stelle sieht
man auch ein eigenartiges, unerklärliches Licht. Kirchenbehörden
sowie wissenschaftliche (chemische und biologische) Analysen konnten keinen
natürlichen Grund für die ungewöhnliche Helligkeit finden.
Es geschehen dort Wunder. Die Kirche hat diesen Fall noch nicht öffentlich
anerkannt. Aloisia Lex hatte bis zu ihrem Tod 1984 Visionen von Jesus
und der Mutter Maria. Jetzt hat eine ihrer Töchter, Anna Maria, auch
Visionen. Aloisia sprach nur den lokalen Dialekt, doch die Botschaften
von Jesus und Maria wurden von ihr immer in Hochdeutsch übermittelt
und sofort niedergeschrieben. Laut Aloisia wurde das Kreuz von einem Engel
gemacht. Jetzt, 40 Jahre nach dem ersten Erscheinen, ist das Kreuz immer
noch deutlich im Rasen zu sehen.

Seeping icons called "a sign from God"
Icons in the possession of the Reverend Moueen Hana, a priest of the Eastern
Orthodox church, have been seeping olive oil for the past eight years.
Hana, who lives in Northern California, has had as many as 30 icons over
the years, and currently has eight. Twice, his hands have dripped olive
oil during prayers, he says. The oil has been responsible for at least
three healings.
Hana traces the miraculous events to a woman named Myrna Nazoor from Syria.
In 1982, Nazoor began exhibiting healing powers and having visions of
the Virgin Mary. Each time Nazoor prays, her hands fill with olive oil,
according to Reverend Hana. The oil is used for healing purposes. In 1988,
one of Nazoor's icons seeped 57 gallons of olive oil. A sample was sent
to a German laboratory, who reported the liquid to be 100 per cent olive
oil, no impurities.
"That means it's a miracle," says Hana. "Only a miracle
could make olive oil so pure." That same year, Nazoor visited Hana.
She brought along a photo of her icons, and Hana made 8,000 copies, both
by photocopying and by photographing it. "Many of these have exuded
oil," Hana says. He believes this phenomenon is a continuation of
the Syrian miracle, which representatives of at least three Orthodox churches
have confirmed. Hana says his icons are "... a sign from God. He's
saying: 'Hey, I really exist.'"

Virgin's tears of blood proved human
The latest in a long line of growing miracles connected with the Virgin
Mary is a statue which weeps tears of blood in Civitavecchia, not far
from Rome, Italy. The statue was brought back to Italy from Medjugorje
for a family whose son suffered from poor health. A shrine was built for
it in the family garden and the young daughter brought an offering of
flowers and prayers to the Madonna daily.
The child was the first to notice the Virgin's tears. The village priest
was soon informed and the statue was taken away to be tested. The church
is traditionally very sceptical and cautious about such miraculous events
and as yet no pronouncement has been made. But the tears of blood have
been analysed by Vatican scientific experts. Their findings: the blood
has been found to be human blood, from a male - the DNA structure confirms
this.
Other similar incidents have taken place and been reported on and investigated.
The church remains silent while ordinary people continue to flock to the
scenes of the miracles (although in some instances the statue or icon
has been removed by church authorities for verification) to pray and offer
thanks.
Miraculous signs, such as weeping or bleeding statues of the Virgin Mary,
have appeared in the following places in Italy in recent years (the Vatican
has yet to announce authentication): Potenza (May 1991); Nocere Inferiore
(June 1992); Subiaco (January 1994); San Chirico, Raparo (May 1994); miracles
attributed to Padre Pio (August 1994). Further sightings have taken place
in Bergamo and Laziso in the north of Italy.
A bas-relief of the Holy Virgin in Tivoli, east of Rome, has begun weeping.
In Taranta Peligna in the Abruzzi mountains, a statue bought by a pilgrim
in Lourdes has developed bloodstains on its face, throat, breasts, and
hands.
Since this report was compiled, a new weeping statue of the Virgin Mary
has been discovered at Castrovillari, Calabria. Tears of blood from this
statue were also analysed and found to be human, belonging to the O-positive
blood group.

Miracle at Grangecon
In a back room of the Post Office in the tiny Southern Ireland village
of Grangecon, County Wicklow, Post Mistress Mary Murray keeps her statue
of the Virgin Mary. The painted statue stands about 12 inches high and
is housed in a sealed glass case.
BBC2's 40-minute TV programme Everyman of 18 December 1994 told how the
statue had been found to be "crying blood", as already reported
by Share International in its July 1994 issue. The statue, with its blood-stained
cheeks, was clearly shown to BBC2 viewers.
When the phenomenon was first discovered, Mary Murray was persuaded to
call the local radio station and tell listeners that "a miracle was
happening in Grangecon". At 3pm every day, the glass case with its
holy contents is taken in procession, to the accompaniment of Hail Marys,
to be placed beside the outdoor shrine of the Madonna nearby. Pilgrims
from all over the world have been to see the weeping statue, and pray.
Many believe that the Madonna is using the phenomenon of tears to stimulate
prayer and devotion, and small groups of believers meet regularly in Mary
Murray's back room in the presence of the statue to say the Rosary and
give each other spiritual support.
The manufacturers of the statue say that the adhesive used to fix its
eyes can become moist in certain temperatures and this could explain the
happening. The Vicar of the local Catholic church is non-committal - he
says he looks for God, not in statues, but in people - but he does not
condemn.
Mary herself has not yet agreed to have the tears chemically tested, being
unwilling to open the case and disturb the statue; she would not wish
it to be tampered with, as, she asserts, happened with the Turin Shroud.

is created by the Master Who was the Madonna. He says that if the tears
are analysed they will be found to be blood without platelets.)

Weeping statue
Every day, dozens of people visit a small home in Australia to witness
tears flow from the eyes of a statue of Our Lady of Fatima. Sixteen year-old
Sam Scevola from Rooty Hill, a town near Sydney, bought the statue in
an antique shop. Shortly after bringing it home, he and his mother discovered
drops of liquid rolling down the statue's face. "It took us a while
to realize it was the statue that was sobbing," says Sam.
"My mother and I both collapsed when the truth sank in." The
statue's crying has since been so constant it has forced the Scevolas
to place cotton balls between the lady's praying hands and her body to
collect the moisture. Church officials are aware of the crying statue,
but have no comment until an investigation can be completed.

Weeping Madonna
In just three weeks, 3,000 visitors from all over the world have travelled
to the County Wicklow village of Grangecon, Ireland, to witness a statue
of the Madonna which weeps blood. In early May, Mrs Murray, a retired
postmistress, and her daughter noticed that their statue's eyes had filled
with tears, and drops of blood had trickled from the left eye, leaving
a brown stain.
Many visitors claim to have seen the eyes water. Most say a sense of peace
radiates from the statue. With people flocking to see the statue, Mrs
Murray had welcomed travellers from 8am to 11pm every day. Recently, to
cope with these crowds, the statue has been moved and placed in the village.

Statue weeping oil
The curious and faithful have gathered in the Bensonhurst neighbourhood
of Brooklyn, New York, to see a holy picture of the Virgin Mary that was
weeping oil. The icon was in the house of a member of the Egyptian Coptic
Orthodox sect. Said one visitor: "If you smell it, it doesn't smell
at all. You feel it when you go up to it. You feel like a chill going
through your body." The oil continued to drip for days and stopped
when the picture was transferred to an Egyptian church nearby.

Miraculous media coverage
'The case of the weeping Madonna' was the cover story of a recent issue
of US News and World Report. The article documented the miraculous events
surrounding a young Virginia priest, James Bruse (see Share International,
May 1992, p.11).
Beginning in late 1991, statues of the Virgin Mary began weeping and bleeding
in Bruse's presence. Bruse also reported that his hands and feet bled,
as from crucifixion wounds. Five hundred of Bruse's parishioners witnessed
one of the weeping statues, and stories of unexplained 'healings' made
the rounds.
Even Bruse's parents reported unusual phenomena: The crucifix at the Virginia
home of James and Ann Bruse sometimes cried so much that tears would stream
down the wall. "If we knew my son was coming over," said Ann
Bruse, "we would put bowls under the statues. They'd start weeping
before he'd get out of the car."
The article reports on the phenomena in a serious, straightforward manner,
but does present the view of a sceptic who says he could reproduce such
events using scientifically-known techniques. Also included in the seven-page
article is a brief 'History of Miracles,' which mentions the extraordinary
events surrounding the Buddha, Moses, the Christ, Mohammed, Ramakrishna
and others throughout history.
It reports that 53 per cent of Americans say they have felt "a presence
or power" in their lives that is different from their ordinary selves.
The article concludes this way: "Until the Lord takes to skywriting
his message, both the veracity and the consequences of such phenomena
are likely to remain unsettled.
Which leaves us, in the end, with just a priest, some statues and a host
of decent people, dreaming a beautiful dream. Whether the dream is real,
and what it means, are up to you to decide."

Weeping statue in Ohio
In a tiny church located in the industrial section of a small Ohio town,
a painting of the Virgin Mary is seen to weep. At St Jude Orthodox Church
in Barberton, Ohio, tears are reported to flow from the Virgin's eyes
on the two-by-three-foot painting. St Jude's pastor, Father Roman, like
many of the visitors to the church, believes the event in Barberton is
a miracle - "a sign of compassion from God." He says of the
painting: "If it gives some blessing, we'd like people to come and
see it. We want to try to bring people back to church and God."

Painting of the Virgin and Christ Child 'weeps'
Thousands of people have flocked to the tiny Greek Orthodox Shrine of
St. Michael in Tarpon Springs, Florida, to see its 'weeping icons'. Worshippers
report tears have flowed from the eyes and feet of a painting of the Virgin
Mary and the Christ Child, and that as many as six icons were weeping
at one time. Though the phenomenon appeared to stop by the following day,
clergymen said new points of moisture, "like tiny crystals",
continued to appear, and smears resembling water-stains remain on two
of the art works.

Weeping Virgin
Thousands of people are flocking each day to see "the Weeping Virgin"
at a small Greek Orthodox church in Chicago. In early December 1986, the
local priest first noticed streaks of moisture streaming from the eyes
and hands of a painting of the Virgin Mary located behind the church altar.
Since then, thousands of people from as far away as Pakistan and Sri Lanka
have visited the site.
The Greek Orthodox Church sent emissaries to investigate the painting,
and determined that the tears were not a hoax. The Church interprets the
tears as a plea from the Virgin Mary for the world to abandon materialism
for spirituality.
